Set by the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, historic Niagara-on-the-Lake captures
attention with its Georgian and Victorian-styled buildings, waterfront park and
surrounding fields of grapevines. The town was once the capital of Ontario,
and home to a strong military presence and a busy port. Fort
George National Historic Site was the military stand post of the British,
and has been completely reconstructed, with costumed actors performing throughout
the site. The Laura
Secord Homestead is the celebrated home of the War of 1812 heroine, and visitors
can look through the two storey refurbished cottage. Besides window shopping and
dining in Olde Town, hundreds come to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the well-known Shaw
Festival Theatre, one of Canadas premier theatre festivals that generally
run from April until December. Wineries are also very abundant in the area, and
most offer tours and tastings. For those who favour the fresh air, a sopping wet
tour of the area on a jet boat tour may be on the agenda (dry options are also
available) or a bike tour along the scenic trails.
